Historical Background

AFC Ajax is named after the Greek hero from Homer's Iliad, a warrior of great strength and courage, but do they live up to their name? Hell yeah, we think they do! Not convinced yet? Well, here's why any TV sport fan should watch this great team!

Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax is a football club in the Netherlands that plays in the Eredivisie, Netherlands' highest level of professional football. Ajax have been around since 18th March, 1900, when the club was founded in Amsterdam.

It didn't take long for Ajax to climb to the top: in 1911, they went professional, and in 1917, they won the KNVB Beker, the Dutch national cup! Since then, they've been dominating the competition, becoming Netherlands' best team, making Ajax on TV and live stream all the more exciting!

Kit, Crest and Colours

The kit saw a few changes in its lifetime: the first uniform was all-black with a red sash, but this was soon replaced by black shorts and a red-and-white striped shirt. However, when turning professional in 1911, Ajax had to change kit because Sparta Rotterdam had an identical one.

Ajax then decided upon white shorts and a white shirt with a large red stripe coming down the middle. The first crest was drawn in 1900, and it was a drawing of an Ajax player with the original uniform. The drawing was touched up in 1911 to portray the new uniform.

However, the crest was changed completely in 1928 to an elaborate portrait of the hero Ajax! Talk about living up to their name! The crest was then updated in 1990 to a minimalist portrait of Ajax using only 11 lines to represent the 11 players of the team!

Grounds

The first of Ajax's stadiums, built in 1911, was called Het Houten Stadion ('The Wooden Stadium', literally). In 1928, they moved to the Olympic Stadium. Then in 1934, they moved to the De Meer Stadion. They played in this stadium until 1996, where they moved to their current stadium, the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Key Players

There are so many great players in this team, but 2 of the best are Dusan Tadic who scored 6 goals in this year's Champions League and 20 in the Eridivisie! Then there is also Hakim Ziyech who scored 2 goals in the Champions League and 15 in the Eredivisie!

Honours

Not only are they Netherlands' most successful team, but one of the most successful teams around! They've gotten so many honours, that they must have lost count! In 1992, they were considered The World's Club Team of the Year by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics!

In 1995, they earned the title World Team of the Year by World Soccer magazine and Kicker magazine regards them as the secondmost successful team of the 20th century! Moreover, they are one of only 5 teams that earned the right to keep the European Cup!
