Southampton begin a new era for the club at Anfield following the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl after four years, with the Saints having lost nine of their past 10 meetings with Liverpool in the Premier League.
The Reds will therefore welcome the visit of the Saints as they seek to continue to recover from a poor start to the season, though talismanic forward Mohamed Salah seems to have found his form again. The Liverpool v Southampton betting odds point to an easy home win, but is that good value?
Consistency eluding Reds
Liverpool’s owners have confirmed they are seeking investment in the club, with Reds fans likely to make their feelings clear on the issue at Anfield this weekend.
Leeds won at Anfield in Liverpool’s last home game but they are typically extremely strong in front of their own fans in the Premier League. Liverpool’s previous home loss in the Premier League had come more than 18 months ago, so it seems unlikely lightning will strike twice again here.
After struggling to find form in the early weeks of the campaign, Salah seems back to his best. The Egypt star hit both goals to help Liverpool win at Spurs last time out and he has found the net four games in a row, making his any time goalscorer odds of 4/5 with 888Sport feel like a strong play for this one.
Liverpool’s defensive issues are obvious, though, and after the Reds kept successive clean sheets in wins over Manchester City and West Ham they have now conceded at least once in three straight games. The both teams to score odds of 3/4 with 888Sport could therefore be a decent option to consider here.
Saints seeking new manager bounce
Hasenhuttl’s departure seems to have been on the cards for some time, with Southampton’s board making that call in the wake of a 4-1 home loss to Newcastle United last weekend. That defeat left the Saints 18th in the table, having won only one of their past five Premier League games.
Southampton look to be targeting Luton Town boss Nathan Jones as Hasenhuttl’s replacement. Jones has yet to take charge of a Premier League team and he failed in a spell at Stoke City, so it is unclear whether or not he would be able to inspire any immediate improvement for the struggling Saints.
Indeed, with Southampton having been losing at both half time and full time in five of their last seven away Premier League matches, whoever takes charge of this game is sure to be in for a tough task. The 7/10 with 888Sport for Liverpool to lead at both half time and full time therefore makes a lot of sense.
Predictions
Liverpool tend to dominate this fixture so even though their long unbeaten home league run was ended by Leeds recently, it makes sense they are strong favourites in the Liverpool v Southampton betting odds. The Reds have beaten Southampton nine times in their last 10 Premier League meetings.
With Southampton struggling, Liverpool to lead at both half time and full time appeals at 7/10 with 888Sport. This has landed in five of Southampton’s last seven away Premier League matches.
Salah’s hot streak means that his any time goalscorer odds of 4/5 with 888Sport are a good option, but Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses means the both teams to score price of 3/4 is also worth considering.
