World Cup Group G Odds, Match Previews, and Tips for Matchday 1
Group G is one of those groups where you can see a clear favourite, but struggle to pick the remaining three. Group G consists of the favourites to go all the way, Brazil followed by Serbia, Cameroon and Switzerland. All the sides have some quality in the ranks but they’re nothing on Brazil.
There’s a reason Brazil are favourites to win this World Cup. They have an absolutely phenomenal squad and have been blessed by a group that looks very winnable on paper. There’s no top, top sides for them to face. It should be three routine victories for the Brazilians.
The unpredictability of this group comes from the teams below. It is very difficult to pick a side to finish second in this group. Serbia, Cameroon and Switzerland are all very similar in quality. The odds for each of them to qualify on 888sport are as follows:
- Cameroon to qualify- 7/2
- Switzerland to qualify- 10/11
- Serbia to qualify- 10/11
The fact that Switzerland and Serbia share the same odds to qualify just goes to show how difficult to split they are on paper. They don’t face each other until the second of December. Today we’re focused on the matchday 1 odds!
Brazil vs Serbia
- When? Thursday, 24th November at 19:00 GMT
- Where? Lusail Stadium
- Latest Result: Serbia 0-2 Brazil, World Cup 2018 group stages
- Broadcast: BBC One
This is a game that will command the attention of many in the footballing world. Brazil takes on Serbia. Brazil are the favourites to go all the way and many people are putting money on the South American side to win it all.
They have an absolutely incredible squad going into this tournament. If you’re unfamiliar with it; allow us to break it down.
In the goalkeeping department they are spoiled for choice with two of the world’s greatest keepers in Ederson of Man City and Alisson of Liverpool. Both offer different strengths and will likely both be utilised at some point in the tournament.
Defensively, they have Chelsea centre back Thiago Silva who will be paired with his former PSG teammate Marquinhos. This pairing is one of the greatest of our time and has proved itself time and time again. Eder Militao will play at right-back with Alex Telles playing off the left.
In midfield they have a plethora of quality options. Manchester United duo Fred and Casemiro who have both impressed this season. Liverpool’s Fabinho, West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes! All of these players have been absolutely phenomenal this season.
Up top they have:
- Antony
- Neymar Jr
- Gabriel Jesus
- Vinicius Jr
- Richarlison
- Raphinha
- Rodrygo Goes
- Gabriel Martinelli
- Pedro
They have unreal squad depth even without Roberto Firmino who missed out.
Brazil vs Serbia Pick
This Brazil side will be too much for Serbia, they will show the world why they’re favourites with a convincing 3-0 victory. To make these match day 1 odds even better, we suggest combining them with a goal scorer in a scorecast.
Switzerland vs Cameroon
- When? Thursday 24th November, 10:00 GMT
- Where? Al Wakrah Sports Club
- Broadcast: ITV
For the first time ever, Switzerland will be playing against Cameroon on match day 1 of World Cup Group G odds. They have never faced each other and therefore already have created history before a ball has even been kicked.
The matchday 1 odds for this one has Switzerland as the favourites at 8/11 while Cameroon are 22/5 to win (888sport).
Switzerland have some phenomenal talent in their ranks and some players in immaculate form. Granit Xhaka has been a revelation for Arsenal this season, he has finally found the form that caused Arsenal to pay a £35 million fee for him back in 2016. Not only is he screening the back four well, he’s getting forward to provide goals and assists. Something he’ll definitely be trying to do for his country.
Cameroon’s standout man in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The man known for having the best agent in the world as he has played for some elite teams in recent years. Including PSG and now Bayern Munich. The 33 year old has scored 6 and assisted 2 in 10 Bundesliga matches this season. He will be the talisman of this side.
In other areas Cameroon have little quality and will find it difficult, especially against a team like Switzerland.
Switzerland vs Cameroon Pick
We can see the matchday 1 odds being wrong in this one. We think that Switzerland will fail to be victorious on match day 1 and instead will draw. The attack of Cameroon will be deadly enough on the break to score at least a goal and Switzerland won’t have enough to outscore them. The odds of a 1-1 draw with Choupo-Moting scoring are 75/2.
