EURO 2024 Austria vs France: Match Preview & TV Schedule

France will commence their bid for European glory as one of the favourites when they face Austria on Monday 17th June. The game will be held at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf at 20:00.

With star names like Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Ousmane Dembele, it’s not too surprising that the odds point to France as clear favourites in this game. Especially when you consider that Austria will be missing their captain and arguably their best player, David Alaba, who will miss out on the entire tournament due to a knee injury.

Preview for Austria vs France

When you look at the sides on paper ahead of Monday night, there’s one clear favourite and that’s France. Group D will be a tough group to get through, but the expectation for France is to finish the group with all 9 points available to them.

A huge reason as to why France are seen as big favourites to win the game and the tournament itself is because this squad is so similar to the team that narrowly missed out on winning the World Cup against Argentina in Qatar back in 2022. Didier Deschamps has found a winning recipe with this crop of talent, with a lot of France’s play going through veteran Antoine Griezmann. Additionally, a team featuring Kylian Mbappe in the starting eleven can always be considered the favourite to win.

It’s very difficult to point out clear weaknesses in this French team, who even have Ngolo Kante back in the squad. That being said, France gave a poor display against Canada despite fielding a strong team, with the match ultimately ending 0-0.

As previously mentioned, Austria’s biggest blow will be the absence of star man and captain, David Alaba. A world class player indeed, but it will be his experience and leadership that will be a big miss. However, Austria will not go down without a fight, and will definitely not make things easy for France. For France, Theo Hernandez is still a doubt, but Deschamps will hope he can get him fit at some point.

Austria and France have also faced each other in the UEFA Nations League just two years ago, with the game ending 1-1 in Vienna after goals from Weimann and Kylian Mbappe. In the return fixture in Paris, France won the game 2-0 courtesy of strikers from Mbappe and Olivier Giroud.

The last time Austria managed to beat France came sixteen years ago during a World Cup qualifier, once again giving France a psychological edge going into the game on Monday night. Austria will need to do their best to contain Kylian Mbappe if they stand a chance of getting something out of the game, but will also need to be weary of the threat of Ousmane Dembele on the opposite flank. Ultimately, our prediction is three points for France against Austria.
