EURO 2024 Serbia vs England 16th June: Come on England!

What better way to spend your Sunday than watching the Three Lions kick off their EURO 2024 campaign? Gareth Southgate’s side will take on Serbia in their opening game Veltins-Arena, which will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, and BBC Sport Online.

Whilst England are the obvious favourites on paper, Serbia will prove to be a tough opponent on the day. Additionally, both sides have just two wins from their last six, making this a more evenly poised game.

Will Serbia be the Surprise Package at EURO 2024?

Dragan Stojkovic will lead out his Serbian team at EURO 2024 as a potential underdog that could pose a threat to the more ‘favourite’ sides in the tournament. With the likes of Petrovic in goal, Milinkovic-Savic in midfield, and Premier League and Serie A strikers Mitrovic, Jovic, and Vlahovic up top, the Serbs have an extremely solid spine whom are capable of posing a threat to this England side, who are rather short of options at the back this time around. Furthermore, this will be the first time Serbia will compete as an independent nation at a European Championship.

Last Shot at International Glory for Southgate?

Whether England triumph or fall short once again, this is likely to be Southgate’s last crack at the whip with this golden generation of England players. During the last European Championship, England failed to get over the line at home in the final against Italy, ultimately losing to the Azzurri on penalties, a result which could have likely been avoided had Southgate not chosen to instruct his players to sit back after going a goal up early on.

This time, however, Southgate is giving supporters the feeling that he is ready to be the man who can make bold decisions, having left out star names such as Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, and Harry Maguire. That said, England have just lose 1-0 at home to Iceland as their warm up game before the tournament, something which came as a shock to many.

Our prediction on the night is an England win. These England players have had a lot of time to gel together, with a great mix of youth and experience and above all else, world class talent. Whilst Serbia will be tough to beat, England have the strength in depth to get them over the line with the likes of Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Jarrod Bowen, Ivan Toney, and Ollie Watkins all ready to come off the bench and make a big impact.
