Southampton and Brentford head into this weekend’s meeting both sitting safely in mid-table, but perhaps heading in opposite directions. The Bees battered Leeds 5-2 at the weekend, extending their unbeaten run to three Premier League games, while the Saints went down 1-0 at Wolves and have now lost two of their past three.
Nevertheless, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side did win this fixture 4-1 at home last season, perhaps helping to explain why they are favoured in the Southampton v Brentford betting odds to win for this one.
Saints adapting after change of transfer strategy
It is a big season for Hasenhuttl, who has led Southampton to successive 15th-place finishes in the Premier League but must now show signs of progress after a summer of investment on the pitch.
Southampton are not known for heavy spending but they have laid out significant sums on the likes of Duje Caleta-Car, Joe Aribo, Romeo Lavia, Armel Bella-Kotchap and new goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. Lavia in particular has made a good impact, to the extent reports have claimed Chelsea made a £50 million offer for the midfielder on deadline day. Southampton rejected the proposal even though the club could have made a huge profit on a teenager that they signed for £12 million just a couple of months ago.
Goals are likely to be the issue for Southampton this season, however. Scotland striker Che Adams is the only Saints player to have scored more than one Premier League goal so far this term. They have drawn a blank in two of their last three league games, so the 4/6 with 888Sport on Southampton scoring under 1.5 goals in this match stands out as a solid selection to start with for Saturday’s meeting.
Bees searching for consistency
Brentford sit level on points with Liverpool after a strong start to the season, but Thomas Frank’s side might need to tighten up at the back if they are to avoid sliding down the table.
A statement defeat of Manchester United at home was followed by a 3-2 loss at neighbours Fulham, with the Bees having conceded in four games in a row since that thrashing of the Red Devils. Brentford can take confidence from their 3-0 win against Southampton at home last season, that May meeting seeing the Bees run out comfortable victors.
Ivan Toney’s fine form has prompted suggestions he could receive an England call-up ahead of this winter’s World Cup. Toney hit a hat-trick against Leeds last time out and is of interest on the goalscorer markets for this one, but the 4/7 on Brentford double chance appears particularly good value here.
Predictions
Both teams to score has landed in four straight Brentford Premier League games, yet this game feels like it could be tighter and perhaps decided by a single goal.
The 4/6 with 888Sport on Southampton scoring under 1.5 goals appeals as the Saints have drawn a blank in two of their last three games, with the 19/20 on under 2.5 goals in the game another decent option.
Brentford head to Southampton in good form and 4/7 on the Bees double chance is worth taking on too. With 888Sport offering evens on Brentford winning either half, this could be worth considering as well.
