Referee Selection Procedure

UEFA will announce a total of 19 teams of referees who will take part in judging the 51 matches in Euro 2024. Each of these teams consists of a total of five referees. It includes one main referee, two assistant referees, one fourth referee and one reserve assistant referee.

Alongside these referees, all of whom are in the stadium officiating, UEFA also have a team of four video assistant referees (VAR) in use at every match from their headquarters. This means that you have a total of nine referees in action during all the matches at this summer’s Euros.

Referee for the final of the UEFA European Championship 2024

The final decision on who will take charge of the EURO 2024 final will be made towards the end of the tournament. This is due to the common practice in football where referees cannot be of the same nationality as the teams playing.

In the previous Euros final, Dutch referee Björn Kuipers officiated the final between Italy and England. Just a few weeks after the final, he retired from the sport, with the Dutch Super Cup final in August 2021 being his last ever game.
