Ten Hag and United Under Pressure
There have been few bright spots since the start of the season for Manchester United. The team has lost four of their first seven matches in the Premier League, and in the opening round of the Champions League they lost 3-4 against Bayern Munich. Only two of the last six games have resulted in victory, so there is pressure on coach Erik ten Hag before their clash with Galatasaray.
The loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend was the first time since March that the Red Devils went goalless at Old Trafford. It was also the first time since November 2021 that they lost two home games in a row.
Now the hope is that they can turn the tide with an important home win against the Turkish champions. The team has historically had a good handle on Turkish clubs on their own turf, with six wins and two losses in nine previous meetings.
Galatasaray With a Point to Prove
Galatasaray became Turkish champion for the 23rd time last season, and qualified for the Champions League after by beating Molde in the play-offs. It is thus the first time since 2019 that the team is in the group stage of Europe’s most prestigious club tournament. Back then, they finished last, with two points and only one goal scored.
They already doubled that number in the opening match against FC Copenhagen, where two late goals secured a point as it finished 2-2. Now, a tough away game awaits in round two, and Gala has not managed to win away from home in the CL since 2013.
The away statistics are even more gloomy reading against English teams, where ten away trips to England in the European Cup have resulted in seven losses and zero wins. The last four attempts have all ended in defeat, with a total goal difference of 3-10.
Manchester United – Galatasaray: Previous meetings
These two teams have met a total of six times previously in European tournaments. The first time was back in the 1993/94 season, where the Turks knocked out Man Utd in the second round of the CL on away goals after 3-3 at Old Trafford and 0-0 in Istanbul.
Since then, Manchester United have won both meetings at home with 4-0 and 1-0, while it has been 0-0 and 0-1 in Turkey.
5 last games for Manchester United and Galatasaray
The two sides head into this game with different form from one and other. While Manchester United are struggling with just two wins in their last five, Galatasaray come to England with four wins and a draw. The last time the Turks lost a meaningful game was actually way back in April!
