Preview: Belgium v England – Nations League

Gareth Southgate’s men face Roberto Martinez’s side in the UEFA Nationals League on Sunday November 15, having already met at Wembley last October.

Nations League – Qualifiers

England will go head-to-head with Belgium for the second time in the space of a month with both sides aiming to book their place in the competitions’ Semi Finals stage.

Southgate’s men beat No.1-ranked Belgium 2-1 in October but find themselves third in Nations League group A2 following their surprising defeat against second placed Denmark.

The Three Lions were brought back to earth in their match against Denmark and will surely need to up their game if they are to get anything against a far stronger opponent.

It is undoubtedly a fascinating encounter where one of the interesting things about both sides is that they share the same attacking capabilities and firepower.  The Belgians have Romelu Lukaku, Yannick Carrasco and Kevin De Bruyne among their ranks and it remains to be seen whether Eden Hazard will be declared fit to play.

On the other side of the field, England will boast the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho so they too have plenty of attacking prowess up front.  It is defensively where England have been accused of not being up to speed with players like Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker and Jordan Pickford all prone to making a big error or two.

Matchday 5 of the 20/21 Nations League Season

The other fixture of matchday 5 in league A2 features a clash of the Scandinavians between Denmark and Iceland.  After claiming an impressive 1-0 win over England, the 1992 European winners will be looking to extend their excellent run of form against bottom placed Iceland.

As it stands, Belgium top the group with 9 points having won 3 of their 4 games played.  England are currently sitting in third, level with second-placed Denmark on 7 points with the Danes enjoying a better goal difference.
