Super Sunday! West Ham United host the champions Manchester City, two sides who had fantastic seasons last time out. City will be looking to retain the title, which would make it three in a row. The only other side to do this is Manchester United, which provides even more motivation for that City group to complete the hattrick.
West Ham will be on the hunt for European football, whether it’s through the Premier League or by winning the Europa Conference League. They narrowly missed out on Europa League football last season, losing 3-1 to Brighton on the final day.
Both sides have it all to play for on the first day, getting off to a good start is oh so important. Last time the sides met, neither got a result that was too good for their aspirations.
West Ham were chasing Europa League and managed to go two up before allowing City to come back into the game and eventually drawing 2-2. City also needed 3 points as they were in a close title race with Liverpool, a win would’ve been enough to win them the title.
Will we see another intense battle between these two iconic teams?
West Ham making moves
West Ham’s primary target seemed to be Jesse Lingard after his impressive loan stint during the 2020/21 season, he left Man United as a free agent and West Ham were heavy favourites. Until his wage demands came into effect, West Ham were unwilling to match the £180,000 a week that Notts Forest offered.
Instead, the Irons turned to other targets. They’ve kept hold of midfielder Declan Rice which will be a boost. The four signings they have made, all look to be good ones.
- Gianluca Scamacca- £32 million
- Nayef Aguerd- £30 million
- Flynn Downes- £10 million
- Alphonse Areloa- £9 million
The most exciting for West Ham fans is certainly Gianluca Scamacca. The striker has been on many clubs’ radars after an impressive season in the Serie A with Sassuolo. The 23-year-old will provide support to Michail Antonio who is the clubs only other recognised striker. Scamacca could cause real problems to City’s defence.
Manchester City looking for more
The ambition of Manchester City has to be applauded. They had a fantastic season last time out, winning the league, making UCL semis and the FA Cup semis. But they’re still pushing on. They’ve signed Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez to name a few. They are also heavily linked with Brighton fullback Marc Cucurella.
The money pool doesn’t stop at City, they’ll do whatever it takes in the transfer window to ensure they have the best possible chance to win the title and the Champions League. West Ham were a spanner in the works last season but this time around, I think City will have them beat.
The West Ham vs Manchester City odds agree with me. They’re very in favour of Man City. The sky-blues are 1/3 to win while West Ham are 17/2. We suggest putting City in parlay with other sides. Or choosing them as well as both teams to score.
Our pick:
West Ham always have a goal in them at home and City’s high line could leave room for Jarrod Bowen and Gianluca Scamacca to take advantage on the counter. I can see a 3-1 Manchester City result, with Haaland grabbing a couple.
August 7th can’t come soon enough for West Ham vs Manchester City!
