Giro d'Italia on TV and Stream

Taking in more than 2,000 gruelling miles, the 2024 Giro d'Italia promises to be a more testing race than ever. This tough race will start in Piemonte on the 4th of May and see bikes and riders pedal their way to Torino to complete the first stage.

From there, there will be 20 more stages in the Italian grand tour. Riders are faced with an elevation gain of 42,900 metres, as well as some gripping summit finishes.

One of these takes place in the final week, where riders will have to tackle the infamous Passo Brocon. By the 26th of May, all teams will be hoping to ride over the finish line in Rome.

History Giro d'Italia

The famous Italian bike race has been held since 1909 and is now considered one leg of the Triple Crown of bike racing. During its many years, the route has changed to include various different stages.

There are usually several stages that involve a steep climb, often a downhill section, and at some point most iterations cross the Dolomites. The final week often culminates in an uphill climb to the finish line.

Despite riders from all over the world entering in the race's early years. It was a long wait until 1950 for the race to be won by anyone other than an Italian rider. Hugo Koblet was the first to manage it, and later Irish rider Stephen Roche won the race on the way to winning the Triple Crown of Cycling.

In the present day, the tour remains as competitive as ever. In 2023, stage 18 brought testing climbs and summit finishes, allowing Welsh rider Geraint Thomas to fall behind. However, this year, it starts with a descent, which might play into his hands.

The entrance into the final weekend (stage 20) will be much more testing, taking the riders a distance of 181 kilometres from Alpago to Bassano del Grappa.

Whoever you're choosing to support, be sure to tune in on the final weekend to cheer them home to Rome. It's hard to know whether to expect the pink jersey to head past the line first, or any of the other riders in this testing race!

One thing is for sure though, that final Saturday is going to be a stage that separates the pack.
